EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 19th century, showcases a group of Bhutanese people, primarily of Tibetan origin, in their traditional attire. The image is taken from 'The People of India: A Series of Photographic Illustrations, with Descriptive Letterpress, of the Races and Tribes of Hindustan,' published during the 1860s under the order of Lord Canning, the Viceroy of India. The Bhutanese, an indigenous people of Bhutan, are depicted here in their ethnic garments, which were worn during that era. The men in the photograph are dressed in long, flowing robes, known as ghos, which are tied at the waist with a belt called a kera. The ghos are often made of raw silk or cotton and can be found in various colors and designs. The men also wear a jacket, called a toga, which is worn over the gho and is secured with a brooch. The Bhutanese people have a rich and fascinating history, and their unique cultural practices and traditions have remained largely unchanged over the centuries. Bhutan is a landlocked country located in the Eastern Himalayas, and its people have maintained a strong connection to their Tibetan heritage. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing us with a window into the lives of the Bhutanese people during the Victorian era. It is a reminder of the diverse and complex history of India and its people, and the importance of preserving and celebrating the world's cultural heritage.
