This stunning chromolithograph depicts two exquisite bolete mushrooms, the Greville's bolete (Suillus grevillei, formerly known as Boletus flavus) and the Velvet bolete (Suillus variegatus, formerly known as Boletus variegatus). The image is taken from Leon Rolland's seminal mycological guide, "Atlas des Champignons," published by Paul Klincksieck in Paris in 1910. The illustration was created by A. Bessin and expertly rendered in chromolithography by Lassus. The Greville's bolete, also known as the Larch bolete, is a beautiful and sought-after edible mushroom that grows at the base of larch trees. Its cap is a rich, reddish-brown color with a velvety, slightly scaly appearance, and it has a white, porous stem. The pores on the underside of its cap are a bright yellow, which can turn brown when bruised. The Velvet bolete, or Variegated bolete, is another delicious and distinctive edible mushroom. It is characterized by its velvety, variegated cap, which ranges in color from reddish-brown to orange-brown, with irregular white patches. The stem is white and covered in small, white warts. The pores on the underside of the cap are a bright yellow, which can turn brown when handled. Both of these mushrooms are prized by mycophiles (mushroom enthusiasts) for their distinctive appearances and delicious flavors. They are also important components of the forest ecosystem, playing a crucial role in the decomposition of dead organic matter and contributing to the health and productivity of forests.
