EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving is a stunning representation of two magnificent animals of the Old World: the Greater Mouse-deer (Tragulus napu) and the Arabian Gazelle (Gazella arabica). The image is taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838. The Greater Mouse-deer, also known as the Malay Chevrotain or Napu, is a small, agile mammal native to Southeast Asia. It is the largest of the mouse-deer species, with a body length of up to 60 cm and a weight of around 5 kg. The Greater Mouse-deer is well-adapted to its forested habitat, with a slender body, long legs, and large, pointed ears. Its coat is a reddish-brown color, with white spots on its sides and a white stripe down its back. The Arabian Gazelle, on the other hand, is a graceful antelope native to the Arabian Peninsula. It is the smallest gazelle species, with a body length of up to 120 cm and a weight of around 25 kg. The Arabian Gazelle is characterized by its slender legs, long neck, and distinctive black markings on its face and sides. Its coat is a light brown color, with white spots on its sides and a white underbelly. Both animals are depicted in this engraving in their natural habitats, with the Greater Mouse-deer shown in a forested area and the Arabian Gazelle in a desert landscape. The intricate details of their fur patterns, as well as the lush vegetation and rocky terrain in the background, are beautifully rendered in the hand-coloring. This engraving is a testament to the remarkable skill and artistry of the natural history illustrators of the 19th century, who meticulously documented the natural world for the benefit of science and art. It is a reminder of the rich biodiversity of our planet and the importance of preserving it for future generations.
