EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored steel engraving, drawn and engraved by Adolph Fries for Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases three intriguing species from the natural world: a Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), a Green Frog (Pelophylax esculentus), and a Eurasian Treecreeper (Certhia familiaris). The Great Crested Grebe, also known as the great crested grebe or the great crested diving-bird, is a large and elegant waterbird with distinctive crest feathers on its head. Its sleek, dark plumage is contrasted by the bright yellow eyes and orange-red bill, making it a striking sight in its aquatic environment. Next to the Grebe, a Green Frog sits on a lily pad, its bright green coloration blending seamlessly with the surrounding vegetation. This common European species is known for its powerful legs, which it uses to leap from one place to another, and its ability to change color depending on its surroundings. The Eurasian Treecreeper, a small, brown woodpecker, is perched on a tree trunk in the background. This bird is characterized by its zigzagging movement as it climbs up tree trunks in search of insects, using its long, curved beak to probe the bark for food. This beautiful engraving not only captures the unique features of these three species but also highlights the artistic skill and attention to detail of Adolph Fries and Felix-Edouard Guerin-Meneville's work. It is a testament to the natural wonders that can be found in the world around us and the importance of documenting and preserving them for future generations.
