Blacks Capt Commission Commonwealth Cwgc Elms Grave Graves Ieper Nine Sergeant Ypres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the grave of Sergeant Daniel Gallaher, a former captain of the All Blacks rugby team, at Nine Elms Cemetery in Ieper (Ypres), Belgium. Sgt. Gallaher, who was born in New Zealand, served in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He was initially commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Canterbury Regiment in 1915, but was later promoted to the rank of captain in the Wellington Battalion. Tragically, Sgt. Gallaher was killed in action on October 23, 1917, during the Battle of Passchendaele, one of the costliest battles of the war. He is buried in Nine Elms Cemetery, which is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). The CWGC was established to ensure that the graves of the fallen from the First and Second World Wars were marked and maintained, regardless of nationality. The All Blacks, New Zealand's national rugby team, have a proud history and a strong connection to the military. Many of the team's early players served in the military during times of war, including Sgt. Gallaher. His service and sacrifice are remembered not only by the rugby community, but also by the people of New Zealand and Belgium. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by soldiers during the First World War and the enduring bond between rugby and the military.
