EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the enchanting Golden-backed Uakari, Cacajao melanocephalus, also known as the Golden-backed Cacajao or the Black-headed Uakari. The image is based on a drawing by the renowned naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and was published in Edward Griffiths' seminal work, "The Animal Kingdom" by the Baron Cuvier, in London, 1824. The Golden-backed Uakari is a New World monkey native to the Amazon rainforests of South America. They are easily recognizable by their striking black face, golden-orange back, and long, bushy tail. This primate is a member of the uakari family, which also includes the White-faced Uakari and the Red-faced Uakari. The Golden-backed Uakari is a social species, living in groups of up to 30 individuals. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on fruits, leaves, and bark. Their diet also includes insects, which they consume for their high protein content. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of natural history illustration during the 19th century. The meticulous hand-coloring brings the Golden-backed Uakari to life, revealing the richness and diversity of the natural world that captivated naturalists like Alexander von Humboldt and inspired generations of scientific exploration and discovery.
