EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the remnants of a German gun bunker on Routes des Perruques in Grandcamp-Maisy, Normandy, France. The image, taken in 2009, provides a haunting reminder of the intense battles that raged in this area during the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944. The bunker, believed to have once housed both 155mm guns and 10.5cm howitzers, was a formidable fortification in the German defensive line. It was not until June 9, 1944, that the 5th Ranger Battalion, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel James Rudder, managed to take the position after a grueling five-hour battle. The Rangers, known for their daring raids and unconventional tactics, had been tasked with securing the eastern flank of Omaha Beach. The image conveys a sense of history frozen in time, with the crumbling concrete and rusted metal of the bunker standing in stark contrast to the lush green landscape that surrounds it. The 5th Ranger Memorial, visible in the foreground, pays tribute to the brave men who fought and died in the battle for Grandcamp-Maisy. The memorial, dedicated in 1948, bears the inscription "In Memory of the 5th Ranger Battalion who landed here on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and fought their way inland to secure the eastern flank of Omaha Beach." This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Allied forces during the D-Day landings and the fierce fighting that took place in Normandy. It serves as a testament to the bravery and determination of the 5th Rangers and the other soldiers who fought to secure a foothold in Europe during World War II.
