EDITORS COMMENTS
Amongst the diverse and captivating denizens of the aquatic and terrestrial realms, frogs, toads, and tadpoles continue to enchant and fascinate us with their unique beauty and intriguing adaptations. This stunning lithograph by C. Loeffler, published in Lorenz Oken's Universal Natural History in 1841, showcases an impressive array of these amphibians. Beginning with the European tree frog (Hyla arborea), we encounter the rattle-voiced tree frog (Auletris crepitans), whose mating call sounds like a rattle. The edible frog (Rana esculenta) is a common sight in European ponds and is often consumed as a delicacy. The shrinking frog (Pseudis paradoxa) is known for its ability to shrink its body when threatened, while the Surinam horned frog (Ceratophrys cornutus) boasts distinctive horns on its head. The Spix's horned tree frog (Hemiphractus scutatus) and the fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) display vibrant colors, while the midwife toad (Alytes obstetricans) is named for its unique reproductive behavior. The cane toad (Rhinella marina) and African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) are infamous invasive species, while the giant rain frog (Breviceps gibbosus) and pumpkin toadlet (Brachicephalus ephippium) are lesser-known gems. Lastly, the Suriname toad (Pipa pipa), with its distinctive flattened body and webbed feet, is perfectly adapted for life in the muddy waters of its rainforest habitat. This exquisite work of art not only showcases the natural history of these fascinating creatures but also highlights the importance of preserving their habitats and understanding their roles in the intricate web of life.
