EDITORS COMMENTS
Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor (1415-1493), also known as "L'Empereur des Romains" or "Lempereur," is depicted in this stunning chromolithograph print from Loredan Larchey's "Ancien Armorial Equestre de la Toison d'Or et de l'Europe au 15e siecle" (Ancient Equestrian Armorials of the Order of the Golden Fleece and Europe in the 15th century), published in Paris in 1890. The image is taken from illustrated manuscript 4790 in the Bibliotheque de l'Arsenal. Frederick III, a member of the Habsburg dynasty, ascended to the imperial throne in 1452. He is shown here in regal attire, wearing the imperial crown and holding the scepter and orb. The background features the emblem of the Order of the Golden Fleece, which Frederick founded in 1430. The Order, represented by the white fleece on a red background, was an exclusive and prestigious chivalric order that aimed to promote unity among European rulers. The intricately detailed print showcases the grandeur and opulence of the Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages. The use of vibrant colors and meticulous shading adds depth and texture to the image, making it a valuable historical artifact. The print also serves as a testament to the artistic skill and craftsmanship of the time, reflecting the high level of expertise in the production of chromolithographs during the late 19th century. Overall, this print of Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, offers a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages, providing valuable insights into the political, social, and artistic developments of the time.
