EDITORS COMMENTS
Francis I, Emperor of Austria (1768-1835), is depicted in this stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Corsi from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World" published in Florence in 1845. In the image, Francis I is shown wearing the robes of the Grand Master of the Austrian Imperial Order of the Iron Crown. The emperor's regal attire is adorned with intricate gold embroidery, symbolizing his high rank and authority. Francis I ascended to the throne of the Habsburg Monarchy in 1792, following the premature death of his older brother, Emperor Leopold II. His reign was marked by numerous military conflicts, including the Napoleonic Wars, which significantly impacted the political landscape of Europe. During his rule, Francis I also held the title of Duke of Milan and Lodomeria, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and King of Hungary and Bohemia. In this engraving, he is depicted wearing the Doge's robes of Venice, which he may have acquired through his role as the Procurator of Saint Mark in Venice. The Procurator was the representative of the Doge in Rome and was responsible for maintaining the political and religious interests of Venice in the Papal States. The Iron Crown of Austria, which Francis I is symbolically holding in the image, is one of the most important and ancient symbols of the Habsburg Monarchy. It is believed to have been worn by various Austrian rulers since the 10th century and is said to have miraculous powers. The crown is now kept in the Imperial Treasury in Vienna and is considered a significant historical artifact. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving offers a glimpse into the opulent world of imperial court fashion and the rich history of the Habsburg Monarchy during the 19th century.
