EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning lithograph, titled "Flowering Plants," is an exquisite illustration from Lorenz Oken's Universal Natural History, Allgemeine Naturgeschichte fur alle Stände, published in Stuttgart in 1841. The illustration showcases a vibrant and diverse array of flowering plants, each in the prime of their bloom. Among the depicted flora are several tropical gems, such as the Mammee Apple (Mammea americana), its lush white flowers contrasting against glossy green leaves. The Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is also featured, its large, juicy fruits encased in a spiky, reddish-purple rind. The Vateria indica, or Breadfruit Tree, is illustrated with its large, white, fragrant flowers, which give way to the edible fruit that was a staple food source for Polynesian islands. Additionally, the lithograph includes several medicinal and aromatic plants, such as Camphor (Cinnamomum camphora), with its white, waxy, aromatic resin, and Bacuri (Platonia insignis), whose seeds yield a delicious nut and an oil used in perfumery. White Cinnamon (Cananga odorata) is shown with its large, fragrant, white flowers, while Ironwood (Olea ferruginea) is depicted with its small, pinkish-purple flowers and its dense, hardwood. The illustration also features several exotic and intriguing plants, such as the Poppy (Papaver rhoeas), with its iconic red flowers and opium-producing varieties. The Violet (Viola odorata) is shown with its delicate, sweet-smelling flowers, while the Nepenthes rajah, a type of pitcher plant, is illustrated with its unique, carnivorous features. The Venus Flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) is also depicted, its leaves poised to capture unsuspecting insects. This lithograph is not only a beautiful work of art but also a testament to the rich diversity and intrigue of the natural world, as documented by the keen observations and meticulous illustrations of Lorenz Oken and his contemporaries.
