EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving, taken from the esteemed "Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle" (Universal Dictionary of Natural History) by Charles d'Orbigny, published in Paris in 1849, showcases two intriguing birds from different continents: the Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) and the Rufous-tailed Rock-thrush (Monticola saxatilis). The Fieldfare, a native of Europe, Asia, and North America, is depicted on the left side of the image. This medium-sized thrush is characterized by its brownish-gray back, wings, and tail, with a reddish-brown breast and belly. The Fieldfare's distinctive black mask and white underparts are also clearly visible in the illustration. This bird is known for its migratory habits, traveling between its breeding grounds in the northern hemisphere and its wintering grounds further south. On the right side of the engraving, the Rufous-tailed Rock-thrush, native to Africa and Asia, is depicted perched on a rocky outcrop. This bird is easily identified by its striking rufous tail, which is much longer than its body. The Rufous-tailed Rock-thrush has a grayish-brown back, wings, and head, with a white belly and a black mask similar to the Fieldfare. This bird is a resident of mountainous regions, and it feeds primarily on insects and other invertebrates. The intricate details of these birds are beautifully captured in this hand-colored engraving, which was produced by the skilled hands of Fournier, based on an original illustration by Edouard Travies. The Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle was a groundbreaking work in the field of natural history, and this image is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that was a hallmark of the publication.
