Field Gun outside the TJaegershof Restaurant

The restaurant has a small but interesting museum which is concerned with the activities nearby, including the St Sixtus Abbey. The monks are of the Cistercian or Trappist order and are committed to a life of seclusion, prayer and manual labour. On 12 May 1915 serial deserter Private Edward Chase was shot in the Abbey and the bullet holes in the wall against which he was standing are still there. The monks respect these marks and often offer a prayer as they pass. Date: 2016

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "A Historical Mark of Honor: The Field Gun Outside Tjaegershof Restaurant, Ieper, Belgium, 2016" 2.. This evocative image captures the Field Gun standing proudly outside Tjaegershof Restaurant in Ieper, Belgium. The restaurant, with its small but interesting museum, is situated in close proximity to the historic St Sixtus Abbey. The monks of this abbey, belonging to the Cistercian or Trappist order, dedicate their lives to seclusion, prayer, and manual labor. 3. The peaceful ambiance of the abbey was disrupted on 12 May 1915 when serial deserter Private Edward Chase was shot and killed against the very wall where the field gun now rests. The bullet holes from that fateful day remain, serving as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous history of the region during World War I. 4. The monks, who respect these marks, often pause to offer a prayer as they pass by. The field gun, a relic from the First Great War (WW1) in Ypres (Ieper), stands as a testament to the past and the enduring spirit of the community. The scene encapsulates the rich history and the intertwining of the past and present in this remarkable location.
