EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, taken from the Natural History (Naturgeschichte) publication by Gotthilf Heinrich von Schubert and published by Schreiber in Munich in 1886, showcases an intriguing assembly of various seabirds, including some extinct and endangered species. The centerpiece of the image is the extinct Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis e), once abundant in the North Atlantic but hunted to extinction by the late 19th century. Surrounding the Great Auk are several other seabirds, such as the Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri g), the Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula arctica), the Black Guillemot (Cepphus grylle), and the Common Merganser (Mergus merganser). Also depicted are the Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus), the Puffin (Alca lunda), and the Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri g). The extinct Great Auk, with its stocky body and flightless wings, is shown in the center of the image, surrounded by the other birds. The Emperor Penguin, the largest of all living penguin species, is depicted in its iconic posture, huddled together with other penguins to keep warm in the harsh Antarctic conditions. The Atlantic Puffin, with its distinctive black and white plumage and colorful beak, is shown perched on a rock. The Black Guillemot, a small, agile seabird, is depicted in flight, while the Common Merganser, a duck with a distinctive crest, is shown swimming in the water. The Great Crested Grebe, with its elegant S-shaped neck, is shown diving into the water, while the Puffin and the Black Guillemot are shown nesting on cliffs. The Common Merganser, a duck that feeds by diving underwater, is shown swimming with its ducklings. The extinct Great Auk, with its distinctive appearance and flightless wings, is a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered and threatened species.
