EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837, showcases an intriguing assemblage of exotic bees, wasps, and an unusual millipede. The image features an Eastern carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica), with its distinctive large, copper-colored abdomen and long, tubular tongue. Nearby, a Lychee stink bug (Tessaratoma papillosa) is shown, its bright, warning colors on full display. The Leptoscelis balteatus, a small, black bee, is also depicted, as well as the Surinam bee (Euglossa surinamensis), renowned for its long, curved proboscis. Three species of wasps are presented: the long-tailed Ophion macrurum, the paper wasp (Polistes annularis), and the red paper wasp (Polistes squamosa). The Ophion wasp is notable for its long, slender ovipositor, while the paper wasps are distinguished by their distinctive, open nests. The flat-backed millipede (Polydesmus virginiensis) is the final creature in this enthralling collection. With its numerous, flat segments and numerous legs, it is a fascinating example of the diversity of the invertebrate world. This beautiful and detailed illustration offers a glimpse into the rich and diverse world of exotic insects that captured the imagination of naturalists and collectors in the 19th century.
