EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts Erythroxylum laurifolium, also known as the Neptune grass or Mediterranean tapeweed. The plant is native to the Mediterranean region, specifically the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the Atlantic coast of Africa and the eastern coast of South America. The illustration was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The engraving shows the entire plant, with its long, slender stems covered in small, laurel-like leaves. The plant is in bloom, with clusters of small, white flowers at the tips of the stems. The fruit of the plant, which is not visible in this illustration, is a capsule that contains small, round seeds. Erythroxylum laurifolium is an important component of the Mediterranean seagrass community, which also includes Posidonia oceanica, Caulinia zostera, and other species. These seagrasses provide essential habitat for a variety of marine organisms, including fish, invertebrates, and various other plants. The plant has historical significance as well. The leaves and stems of Erythroxylum laurifolium have been used for centuries as a source of fiber for making ropes and mats. The plant was also used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments, including dysentery and jaundice. Today, the plant is still used in some parts of the Mediterranean region for these purposes, as well as for animal feed and as a source of food for humans. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and the importance of botanical illustration in documenting the natural world.
