EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the intensity of the English attack on the Spanish fortified town of Nova Colonia del Sacramento, located on the banks of the Rio de la Plata in south-western Uruguay, on 6 January 1763. During the Spanish-Portuguese War, which was part of the larger Seven Years War, a fleet of East India Company privateers, under the command of Captain John Macnamara, sailed up the river to launch a surprise assault on the town. The image depicts the moment of conflict, with smoke rising from the town as English ships bombard the Spanish defenses. The Spanish town, with its red-tiled roofs and fortified walls, stands defiantly against the English onslaught. The English ships, with their sails furled and cannons at the ready, dominate the foreground of the print. The river, calm and still, reflects the chaos and turmoil of the battle taking place on its shores. The Spanish, caught off guard by the sudden attack, put up a fierce resistance. The town's fortifications, manned by a determined garrison, held out against the English for several hours before finally surrendering. The English victory marked a significant gain for the English in the war, as Nova Colonia del Sacramento was an important Spanish stronghold in the region. The print, created in the 1760s, provides a vivid and dramatic account of the events of that day, capturing the raw power and intensity of naval warfare in the 18th century.
