EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world of Egypt and its intriguing burial practices. The image showcases various artifacts and mummies discovered during archaeological explorations of that time. At the center of the illustration lies the mummy in coffin number one, resting peacefully within its ornate and gilded sarcophagus. The coffin cover, adorned with hieroglyphs and intricate designs, is depicted open, revealing the mummy's face. Nearby, coffin number two is shown with its cover closed, protecting the remains of the deceased. Three bird urns are also displayed in the scene. Urn number three features a cover shaped like a bird, while urn number four is shown without its cover, revealing the intricate interior designed to hold the ashes or mummified remains of the deceased. The mummy of an embalmed ibis, a sacred animal in ancient Egyptian culture, is depicted in the lower left corner. The pyramid in the background represents the final resting place for these ancient Egyptians. The plan of underground chambers in the pyramid is shown in the upper right corner, providing an insight into the complex burial structures that were believed to ensure a successful afterlife for the deceased. This enlightening illustration not only serves as a beautiful work of art but also provides a valuable educational resource, shedding light on the natural history and cultural significance of ancient Egyptian mummies and their burial practices.
