This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1795, offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient world of Egypt and its intriguing burial practices. The image showcases various artifacts and mummies discovered during archaeological explorations of that time. At the center of the illustration lies the mummy in coffin number one, resting peacefully within its ornate and gilded sarcophagus.
