This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Granchio Paguro," showcases two distinct crab species: the edible crab or brown crab (Cancer pagurus, 1) and the furrowed crab or Montagu's crab (Xantho hydrophilus, 2). The illustration is a masterpiece from the Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The edible crab, also known as the brown crab, is a common marine crab found in the North Atlantic and North Sea. Its robust and sturdy build makes it a popular culinary delicacy, especially in European countries. The crab in the image is shown with its pincers held defensively, a typical behavior for this species. The furrowed crab, or Montagu's crab, is a smaller crab species native to the Mediterranean and the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Its distinctive appearance is characterized by the numerous fine lines or furrows on its carapace, which provide excellent camouflage against the rocky seafloor. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, a renowned French botanical illustrator of the 19th century.
