EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon" published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases two intriguing cuckoo species: the Diederik cuckoo (Chrysococcyx caprius) and the Shining bronze-cuckoo (Chrysococcyx lucidus). Both birds are native to Africa and are known for their distinctive appearances and unique reproductive behaviors. The Diederik cuckoo, also referred to as the Diederik or African cuckoo, is depicted on the left side of the image. This medium-sized bird features a glossy black plumage, with a distinctive white eyestripe and a red eye. The Diederik cuckoo is known for its distinctive call, which sounds like a laughing baby. This cuckoo is an obligate brood parasite, meaning it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds and lets them raise its young. The Shining bronze-cuckoo, on the right, is characterized by its iridescent green and bronze plumage, which shimmers in the light. This cuckoo is slightly smaller than the Diederik cuckoo and has a distinctively long, curved beak. The Shining bronze-cuckoo also lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, but it is believed to be less destructive to its host's eggs and chicks than the Diederik cuckoo. This beautiful illustration is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural world and the unique adaptations of these two fascinating cuckoo species. The illustration is part of the extensive collection of Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," which was a popular and influential work in the field of zoology, natural history, and ornithology during the 19th century.
