EDITORS COMMENTS
In this depiction from the Antiquities of Herculaneum by Tommaso Piroli, we witness Hercules in the midst of completing one of his legendary twelve labors. The fourth labor, known as the Erymanthian Labor, required Hercules to capture the wild, fearsome Erymanthian Boar. With unyielding determination and strength, Hercules is shown here in lion skin, triumphantly presenting the boar to Eurystheus, the king of Tiryns, who had set the tasks for Hercules as a form of penance. Eurystheus, understandably terrified, cowers in a storage jar or pithos, seeking refuge from the monstrous creature. The contrast between the fearless Hercules and the terrified Eurystheus highlights the hero's strength and courage in the face of danger. The intricate details of the copperplate engraving capture the raw emotion and intensity of the scene, transporting us back to ancient Greece and the mythological tales of Hercules. This stunning work of art, created by Tommaso Piroli in Rome in 1790, is a testament to the enduring legacy of classical art and mythology. The use of a copperplate engraving technique adds a level of detail and precision that brings the scene to life, making it a must-see for anyone with an interest in ancient history, mythology, or art. The image, reminiscent of the frescoes found in Pompeii, is a beautiful and captivating representation of one of the most famous stories in Greek mythology.
