EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838, showcases two intriguing birds from the natural world: the Delandes Coua (Coua delalandei) and the Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus). The Delandes Coua, depicted on the left, was a species of coucal, a type of bird belonging to the family Cuculidae, which was sadly declared extinct in the late 19th century. The bird is shown in its natural habitat, pecking at a snail, showcasing its unique bill structure, which was perfectly adapted for this feeding behaviour. The Greater Roadrunner, on the right, is a native of the American Southwest and Central America. This bird, a member of the cuckoo family, is well known for its distinctive appearance and impressive running ability. The engraving accurately captures the bird's long, slender body, powerful legs, and distinctive crest. The Delandes Coua and Greater Roadrunner are both fascinating examples of the incredible diversity of the natural world. This beautiful illustration, produced using the intricate and detailed technique of copperplate engraving, serves as a testament to the artistry and scientific curiosity of the time. The illustration is a valuable record of these birds, providing a glimpse into the natural history of species that are no longer with us and a reminder of the importance of preserving the diversity of life on our planet.
