This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Gottlieb Tobias Wilhelms Encyclopedia of Natural History: Fish, published in Augsburg in 1804, showcases a scene along the Danube River teeming with aquatic life and the art of angling. The image features two prominent fish species native to the Danube: the Danube salmon (Hucho hucho) and the whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus). The Danube salmon, depicted in the foreground, is a large, powerful fish with a distinctive silver color and black spots. Once abundant in the Danube and its tributaries, this species is now considered endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing.
