EDITORS COMMENTS
This intricately hand-colored steel engraving, created by du Casse after an illustration by Adolph Fries for the "Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle" (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris between 1834 and 1839, showcases a fascinating assemblage of Australian fauna and flora. The central focus of the image is a Northern Common Cuscus (Phalanger orientalis), a nocturnal arboreal marsupial with a yellow belly, depicted perched on a tree branch. Surrounding the cuscus are three other gliding marsupials: the Yellow-bellied Glider (Petaurus australis), the Feathertail Glider (Acrobates pygmaeus), and the Psygmatocerus wagleri beetle. The Yellow-bellied Glider and the Feathertail Glider are both expert gliders, capable of covering long distances through the forest canopy using their membranous skin. The former has a distinctive yellow belly, while the latter, as its name suggests, has feathery tails. The Psygmatocerus wagleri beetle, a striking insect, is shown in the lower left corner of the image. The engraving also features a variety of fungi, including Peziza fungi, and a Phaenicocere, a type of beetle. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this print offer a captivating glimpse into the natural history of Australia during the early 19th century.
