EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 736, featuring the Hymenopteran species Therion amictum, now known as Heteropelma amictum. The intricately detailed illustration, created during the 1820s or 1830s, showcases the wasp-like insect perched atop the delicate petals of Corallorrhiza trifida, commonly known as the Coralroot Orchid. The plant, with its vibrant pink and white blooms, is also known as Corallorrhiza innata or Coralroot Orchid. John Curtis, the renowned English botanist and entomologist, oversaw the publication of this plate as part of his comprehensive work, Flora Sessile Londiniensis, which was later renamed British Entomology. The plate is further adorned with the Latin names of the insect and plant, as well as the common names in brackets. The illustration showcases the Ledipteran suborder of insects, specifically the Hymenoptera order, which includes butterflies and wasps. The Therion amictum, a parasitic wasp, is depicted in the act of laying its eggs on the Coralroot Orchid, a symbiotic relationship that is essential for the wasp's larvae to develop. This exquisite print, with its intricate details and historical significance, offers a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century, showcasing the intricate relationships between different species in the natural world.
