EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite print is a captivating example of the intricate detail and scientific accuracy that characterized the works of John Obadiah Westwood and his team at the British Museum during the 1820s and 1830s. The image, taken from Curtis's British Entomology, plate 705, features the Dipteran fly Rhagio heyshami, now known as Rhagio notatus, which is depicted in the act of alighting on a bloom of Sisymbrium officinale, commonly known as hedge mustard. The fly, a member of the family Ledipteran, is shown with remarkable clarity and precision, its delicate wings spread wide, revealing the intricate patterns of its veins. The plant, with its vibrant yellow flowers and lush green foliage, provides a striking contrast to the fly's dark, almost metallic, exoskeleton. John Obadiah Westwood (1805-1893), the preeminent English naturalist and entomologist, oversaw the production of Curtis's British Entomology, a groundbreaking work that documented over 4,000 species of insects, many of which were illustrated for the first time. Westwood's team of skilled artists and engravers, including the renowned Frederick George Cuvier, produced the stunning illustrations that graced the pages of the publication. This particular plate, produced between 1824 and 1839, is a testament to the painstaking effort and dedication that went into the creation of Curtis's British Entomology. The work was a significant contribution to the field of entomology, providing a comprehensive record of the insects of Britain during the 19th century. Today, it remains an invaluable resource for researchers, naturalists, and collectors alike, offering a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of a bygone era.
