EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 7, featuring the Lepidopteran species Odonestis pini, commonly known as the Pine Lappet or Dendrolimus pini. The butterfly is depicted resting on the needles of a Scotch Fir tree (Pinus sylvestris), with the number 117 inscribed at the bottom left corner of the plate. The plate is dated between 1824 and 1839, making it an intriguing glimpse into the natural history of the British Isles during the 1800s. John Curtis, FLS, was a renowned English naturalist and entomologist who dedicated his life to the study and documentation of various insect species. This particular plate is part of his extensive work on the Lepidoptera, or butterflies and moths. The Pine Lappet, while not native to Britain, is shown here, raising some doubt as to the accuracy of the species' representation in this British entomological collection. The Pine Lappet is a large, striking moth with distinctive lappets, or flaps, on its hindwings. These lappets serve as camouflage, helping the moth blend in with the bark of pine trees. The Scotch Fir tree, a common conifer in the British Isles, provides the perfect backdrop for this image. This print, preserved in the annals of history, offers a glimpse into the rich natural history of the British Isles during the 1800s. It serves as a testament to the dedication and curiosity of naturalists like John Curtis, who sought to document and understand the natural world around them.
