EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," specifically plate 656, published between 1824 and 1839. The plate features a detailed illustration of two species of Rhopalum beetles, Rhopalum tibiale and Rhopalum coarctatum, both belonging to the family Hymenoptera. The beetles are depicted in their natural habitat, resting on the leaves of Torilis arvensis, also known as Spreading Hedge-parsley or Caucalis infesta. The intricate illustrations were produced during the 1820s and 1830s, a time when the scientific community was making significant strides in the study of insects. The plate is part of the extensive collection of the Linnean Society of London, which was founded in 1788 for the advancement of natural history knowledge. The Rhopalum beetles are characterized by their elongated bodies, broad heads, and distinctively patterned wing cases. The first species, Rhopalum tibiale, has a reddish-brown body with black spots, while the second, Rhopalum coarctatum, has a more uniformly brown body. The Spreading Hedge-parsley plant, with its delicate white flowers and feathery leaves, provides a beautiful backdrop to the beetles. This exquisite plate is a testament to the meticulous work of the natural history illustrators of the time, who painstakingly documented the natural world for the benefit of science and knowledge. The intricate details of the beetles and the plant are rendered with remarkable accuracy, making this a valuable resource for entomologists and naturalists even today.
