EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 612, featuring the Hemiptera species Rhyparochromus maculipennis, also known as the Spotted Shieldbug. The plate, published between 1824 and 1839, was produced under the supervision of John Obadiah Westwood and Edmund Reeve. The intricate detail of the insect's exoskeleton is beautifully captured, showcasing its distinctive spotted elytra and long, slender legs. The plant accompanying this Hemiptera species is identified as Romulea columnae, commonly known as Sand Crocus or Trichonema columnae. This plant, native to southern Africa, is a bulbous perennial with slender, tubular flowers that bloom in late winter or early spring. The plant's scientific name is derived from the Latin words 'romulus,' meaning 'Romulus, the legendary founder of Rome,' and 'cola,' meaning 'pillar,' referring to the plant's columnar inflorescence. The Hemiptera order, to which Rhyparochromus maculipennis belongs, is the largest insect order, encompassing over 75,000 described species. The order includes aphids, scale insects, shieldbugs, and their allies. The insects in this order have a unique body structure, characterized by the presence of a beak-like structure called a rostrum, which is used for piercing and sucking plant sap or the bodies of other insects. This plate is a testament to the remarkable natural history discoveries of the 19th century, providing a glimpse into the intricacies of the natural world and the dedication of the scientists and artists who documented it.
