EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century entomological print showcases the Northern Grass-veneer butterfly, specifically identified as Crambus radiellus or Catoptria furcatellus, perched gracefully on the delicate petals of a Moss Catchfly plant (Silene acaulis). The intricate details of both the butterfly and the plant are beautifully rendered in this exquisite work of natural history art. Published between 1824 and 1839, this plate is part of John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," which was instrumental in advancing the scientific understanding of the Lepidoptera, or butterflies and moths, of Great Britain. Curtis, a renowned botanist and entomologist, meticulously documented and illustrated over 4,000 species of insects during his career. The Northern Grass-veneer, also known as the Northern Grass-pinion or Northern Grass-pug, is a small moth with a wingspan of approximately 2.5 centimeters. Its wings are characterized by their pale brown ground color, with darker brown lines and a distinctive white spot near the tip of each forewing. The Moss Catchfly, a low-growing plant with sticky leaves, is native to northern Europe and is known for its attractive pink or white flowers. This print offers a glimpse into the rich natural history of the 1820s and 1830s, providing a window into a time when the study of the natural world was a source of wonder and discovery. The intricate details of the butterfly and the plant, as well as the beautiful composition, make this a must-have for any collection of historical natural history prints or for those with an interest in entomology and botany.
