EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph showcases two fascinating deep-sea dwellers, the Crested Oarfish (Lophotus lacepedei, also known as Lophotes copedianus) and the Oarfish (Regalecus glesne, formerly known as Gymnetrus gladius). Discovered in the late 18th century, these elusive fish have long intrigued scientists and marine enthusiasts due to their unique physical characteristics and elongated bodies. The Crested Oarfish, also known as the Anglerfish Oarfish, is named for the fleshy appendage on its head, which resembles a small lantern and is used to attract prey in the dark depths of the ocean. This lithograph beautifully illustrates the crest's intricate details, as well as the fish's long, slender body adorned with shimmering, iridescent scales. The Oarfish, on the other hand, is known for its serpentine shape and the distinctive dorsal fin that runs the entire length of its body. The fish in this image appears to be in a graceful, undulating motion, showcasing its agility and flexibility. The Oarfish's body is covered in small, round scales, and its dorsal fin is adorned with delicate, filamentous structures. Both the Crested Oarfish and the Oarfish are deep-sea dwellers, spending most of their lives at depths of over 3,000 feet. They are rarely seen by humans due to their elusive nature and the extreme conditions of their environment. This stunning handcoloured lithograph, taken from Carl Hoffmann's Book of the World published in Stuttgart in 1848, offers a rare glimpse into the mysterious world of these fascinating deep-sea creatures.
