EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored steel engraving, created by the Pauquet brothers and based on an original illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas's "Histoire Naturelle des Lepidopteres de Europe" (Natural History of European Butterflies and Moths) published in 1864, showcases two exquisite hawkmoths: the Convolvulus hawkmoth (Agrius convolvuli) and the Privet hawkmoth (Sphinx ligustri). The Convolvulus hawkmoth, with its wingspan reaching up to 10 centimeters, displays a striking pattern of orange, black, and white. Its forewings bear distinctive black spots, while the hindwings exhibit a bold orange coloration with black veins and white spots. The Convolvulus hawkmoth is known for its long proboscis, which it uses to feed on the nectar of convolvulus flowers. The Privet hawkmoth, also known as the Large Privet Moth or the White-lined Sphinx, is slightly larger, with a wingspan of up to 12 centimeters. Its wings are predominantly brown with white lines and spots, and its abdomen is covered in white hairs. The Privet hawkmoth is commonly found in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and it feeds on the nectar of various flowers, including privet, willow, and honeysuckle. Both of these hawkmoths are part of the Sphingidae family, which is characterized by their long proboscises and their ability to fly long distances. This intricately detailed engraving not only showcases the beauty of these moths but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of Europe during the late 19th century.
