EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate print showcases the Conger Eel, scientifically known as Conger conger, also referred to as the European or Common Conger. The Conger Eel is a large, powerful marine fish that belongs to the family Congridae, order Anguilliformes. This illustration was drawn and engraved by the renowned Irish naturalist and artist, Edward Donovan, as part of his seminal work, "A Natural History of British Fishes," published between 1802 and 1808. Donovan's meticulous attention to detail is evident in this illustration, which captures the Conger Eel's elongated, serpentine body, covered in small, overlapping scales. The fish's large, triangular pectoral fins and powerful, crescent-shaped tail are also clearly depicted. The Conger Eel's eyes are large and expressive, and its mouth is filled with sharp, needle-like teeth. The Conger Eel is a highly-prized game fish and is found in both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean seas. It can grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length and weigh up to 20 kilograms (44 pounds). This eel is an ambush predator, lying in wait on the seabed and using its powerful jaws to seize unsuspecting prey. Donovan's illustration of the Conger Eel is not only a beautiful work of art but also an important scientific record. The Natural History of British Fishes was one of the most comprehensive works on the fishes of the British Isles at the time, and Donovan's meticulous illustrations provided valuable information for both scientific research and conservation efforts. Today, this print remains an invaluable resource for ichthyologists, zoologists, and marine enthusiasts alike.
