EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Common Kiwi, Apteryx australis, also known as the Southern Brown Kiwi or Tokoeka. The Common Kiwi is a flightless bird native to New Zealand and is the national symbol of the country. This particular image is from the Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, or Natural History Picture Gallery, of Georg Friedrich Treitschke's Gallery of Natural History in Leipzig, Germany, published in 1842. The Common Kiwi is unique among birds as it lays its eggs on the ground, rather than in a nest. Both parents incubate the eggs and care for the chicks, making it one of only a few species of birds where both sexes share the responsibility of parenting. This bird is also characterized by its long, pointed beak, which it uses to probe the ground for insects and other invertebrates. The Common Kiwi is found throughout New Zealand, with the South Island population being the Southern Brown Kiwi and the North Island population being the North Island Brown Kiwi. Due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species, the Common Kiwi population has declined significantly, making it a conservation priority. This beautiful lithograph not only showcases the natural history of the Common Kiwi but also highlights the intricate details and artistry of the 19th-century natural history illustrations. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history prints.
