EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing woodblock engraving, taken from the 1557 edition of Adam Lonicer's Krauterbuch or Herbal, showcases two distinct plants of the botanical world: Common Hemp-nettle (Galeopsis tetrahit) and Black Horehound (Ballota nigra). The meticulously hand-colored illustration captures the unique features of each plant, providing a glimpse into the natural world of the 16th century. Common Hemp-nettle, also known as Wild Mint or Blue Nettle, is depicted on the left side of the print. Its heart-shaped leaves, covered in small hairs, are arranged oppositely on the stem, while its purple-blue flowers bloom in whorls. The plant is native to Europe and Asia and was traditionally used for various medicinal purposes, including the treatment of wounds, burns, and skin irritations. On the right side of the print lies Black Horehound, a plant with a long history of medicinal use. Its dark, hairy stems and serrated leaves are clearly visible, as are its small, white to pinkish flowers. Black Horehound, also known as Marrubium nigrum or Ballota nigra, has been used to treat respiratory issues, such as coughs and bronchitis, as well as digestive problems. This botanical illustration is a testament to the rich knowledge of plants and their medicinal properties that was available during the Renaissance period. The pirate edition or atlas of illustrations, which includes captions in Latin, Greek, French, Italian, German, and English manuscript, further underscores the international reach of this knowledge. The intricate woodblock engraving technique, combined with the vibrant hand-coloring, adds to the beauty and allure of this historical artifact.
