EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Bateman after an illustration by George Shaw in his seminal work "General Zoology, Amphibia," published in London in 1801, showcases two intriguing reptile species native to the forests of Southeast Asia: the Common Green Forest Lizard (Calotes calotes) and the Many-colored Bush Anole (Polychrus marmoratus). The Common Green Forest Lizard, also known as the Galeote Lizard or Lacerta calotes, is a medium-sized lizard with a vibrant green coloration, distinctive white markings on its sides, and a forked tongue. This agile arboreal reptile is well-camouflaged among the lush foliage of its forest habitat, making it a skilled hunter and elusive prey for larger predators. The Many-colored Bush Anole, or Marbled Lizard (Polychrus marmoratus), is a smaller, ground-dwelling species with a striking appearance, featuring a marbled pattern of red, orange, and yellow scales on its body. This anole is a territorial species, using color changes to communicate with rivals and attract mates. The male Many-colored Bush Anole is also known for its distinctive "dewlap," a flap of brightly colored skin under its chin, which it displays during displays and courtship. Both the Common Green Forest Lizard and the Many-colored Bush Anole are important components of their forest ecosystems, playing roles in controlling insect populations and serving as prey for larger predators. This beautiful engraving not only captures their unique appearances but also highlights their significance in the natural world.
