EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored engraving, created by Sebin based on an illustration by Oudart for Charles d'Orbigny's "Universal Dictionary of Natural History" published in Paris in 1849, showcases an intriguing assemblage of various freshwater fish species native to South Asia. At the center of the image, the Climbing Perch or Anabas testudineus (Anabas scandens), is depicted with its distinctive ear labyrinth, denoted by the number 1a. This labyrinthine structure, located behind the gills, is a unique feature of this fish species, which helps them to breathe air from the atmosphere. The Climbing Perch is also known for its ability to climb trees and shrubs using its adhesive pads, making it an exceptional adaptation for survival in various aquatic environments. To the right of the Climbing Perch, we find the Snakehead Murrel or Channa striata (Ophiocephalus striatus). This fish species, with its elongated snout and laterally compressed body, is a formidable predator in its habitat. The Snakehead Murrel is known for its ability to breathe air through its gills and swim in shallow waters, making it an adaptable fish species. In the upper left corner of the image, the Giant Gourami or Osphronemus goramy (Osphromenus olfax) is depicted. This large, colorful fish species is a popular aquarium fish due to its striking appearance and interesting behaviors. The Giant Gourami is an air-breathing fish, which allows it to survive in low-oxygen environments, and it is also an omnivorous feeder, consuming a variety of aquatic plants and animals. This intriguing image offers a glimpse into the rich biodiversity of freshwater fish species found in South Asia during the mid-19th century, showcasing the meticulous attention to detail and scientific accuracy that was a hallmark of Charles d'Orbigny's groundbreaking work.
