EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored lithograph, taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837, showcases three captivating moths: Citheronia laocoon, Eudesmia menea, and Curoba sangarida. The central moth, Citheronia laocoon, is commonly known as the Luna Moth or the White-marked Tussock Moth. Its elongated body and wings, adorned with intricate patterns of black and green, are a sight to behold. The Luna Moth is known for its distinctive eyespots on its wings, which are thought to serve as a deterrent to potential predators. To the left of the Luna Moth is the Eudesmia menea, also known as the Lunar Eudesmia or the Moon Moth. This moth's wings display a striking resemblance to the moon, with its wingspans featuring a white crescent moon shape against a dark background. The Eudesmia menea is a nocturnal creature, and its wings are transparent during the day, making it difficult to spot. The third moth, Curoba sangarida, is depicted on the right side of the illustration. This moth, also known as the Cossus Moth or the Cossus Sphinx, is characterized by its large, colorful wings and long, slender body. The Curoba sangarida's wings display a beautiful pattern of orange, black, and white, making it a visually striking addition to any collection. This exquisite lithograph, produced during the 19th century, is a testament to the intrigue and fascination that these exotic moths held for naturalists and collectors of the time. The meticulous hand-coloring adds an extra layer of detail and beauty to the already impressive illustrations, making this a valuable addition to any entomology collection.
