EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored engraving depicts the Cinereous Harrier, Circus cinereus, a bird of prey native to Africa and southern Europe. The image is taken from the Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Universal Dictionary of Natural History) by Charles d'Orbigny, published in Paris in 1849. The illustration was created by Edouard Travies and the engraving was executed by Fournier. The Cinereous Harrier, also known as the Montagu's Harrier or the Cinereous Hawk, is a medium-sized harrier with a distinctive appearance. It is characterized by its long, pointed wings, long legs, and slender body. The plumage of this bird is predominantly grayish-brown, with rufous-brown wing linings and a white underbelly. The harrier's head is adorned with a distinctive crest of feathers. The Cinereous Harrier is an agile and skilled hunter, relying on its excellent eyesight and sense of smell to locate prey. It primarily feeds on small mammals, such as rodents and rabbits, but will also take birds and reptiles. This harrier is known for its unique hunting technique, which involves hovering over open ground and using its keen senses to locate prey before swooping down to capture it with its powerful talons. The Cinereous Harrier has a wide distribution range, with populations found in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. However, the species has faced declines in population due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and persecution from humans. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this magnificent bird of prey and ensure its continued survival.
