EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, titled "Cetaceans" from Lorenz Oken's Universal Natural History, Allgemeine Naturgeschichte fur alle Stände, published in Stuttgart in 1841, showcases an impressive collection of various cetacean species. The image includes the Bowhead Whale (Balaena mysticetus), with its distinctive rounded head and long, curved ivory teeth. The Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is depicted with its massive head and large, conical teeth. The Short-beaked Dolphin (Delphinus delphis) is shown leaping gracefully out of the water, while the extinct Steller's Sea Cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is represented lying on the shore. The West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) is also featured, swimming calmly in the water. The Narwhal (Monodon monoceros), with its long, helical tusk, completes this stunning assemblage of marine life. This intricate and detailed lithograph is a testament to the natural history knowledge of the time and serves as a reminder of the rich diversity of the marine world.
