EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph, created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck and lithographed by C. Regnier in 1889, offers a captivating glimpse into the grandeur of 16th-century chivalry through its depiction of the ceremonial robes and insignia of several prestigious orders of knighthood. At the center, the robe and collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece (A) are shown, an emblem of the Spanish monarchy and one of the most ancient and prestigious orders of chivalry. The robe is adorned with a golden fleece, symbolizing the legendary Golden Fleece of Greek mythology, and the collar is decorated with pendants representing the virtues of the Order. To the left, the robe and insignia of the Order of the Garter (B) are displayed. This English order, founded by King Edward III in 1348, is represented by a blue mantle edged with ermine fur, and a garter bearing the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" (Shame on him who thinks evil of it). To the right, the robes and insignia of the Teutonic Knights (C, D) are depicted. The Teutonic Order, a German military and religious organization, is represented by a white mantle with a red cross and a black mantle with a silver cross. The knights are also shown wearing helmets and carrying swords. At the bottom, the sword and wreath of Georg Hund von Wenkheim (E) are displayed. Georg Hund von Wenkheim was a German knight and military commander who lived in the late 16th century. The sword, with its intricately designed hilt, symbolizes his martial prowess, while the wreath represents his noble status. This illustration, part of the extensive collection of Dr. Hefner-Alteneck's "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century," offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of chivalry and the grandeur of 16th-century Europe.
