EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali or Dictionary of Natural Science published in Florence, Italy, in 1837, showcases two intriguing marine species: the Bulls-eye fish (Epigonus telescopus) and the Striped Red Mullet (Mullus surmuletus). The Bulls-eye fish, also known as the Bullseye Goodeid or the Pomatomo telescopio, is a small, round fish with a distinctive circular marking on its side, resembling a bullseye target. The Striped Red Mullet, or Triglia in Italian, is a popular edible fish characterized by its vibrant red color and striking vertical stripes. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill are evident in the intricate depiction of the fish's scales, fins, and other distinguishing features. The engraving was produced using the stipple technique, which involves creating an image by applying tiny dots of ink to a copper plate. This labor-intensive process allowed for the creation of highly detailed and nuanced images, making it an ideal choice for capturing the intricacies of these fascinating marine creatures. The Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali was a groundbreaking work that aimed to document the natural world, including both plants and animals. This illustration, along with countless others in the publication, represents an essential contribution to the history of botany and the study of marine biology.
