This exquisitely hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases two fascinating and distinctive birds native to the Malay region: the Buffy Fish Owl (Bubo ketupu) and the Papuan Frogmouth (Podargus papuensis). The Buffy Fish Owl, also known as the Malay Fish Owl or the Brown Fish Owl, is a large, powerful owl with a distinctive buffy-colored underbelly and a dark, speckled upper body. Its large, yellow eyes and hooked beak are well-suited for hunting fish and amphibians near the water's edge. The Papuan Frogmouth, on the other hand, is a small, nocturnal bird with a unique, flat-faced appearance and large, forward-facing eyes. Its cryptic, mottled plumage helps it blend in with its forest habitat, allowing it to ambush its prey, which includes insects, frogs, and small reptiles. This beautiful illustration is taken from Rene Primevere's "Lessons Complements de Buffon," published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1838.
