EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored engraving depicts a Brown Bear, Ursus arctos, in its natural habitat. The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle" (Universal Dictionary of Natural History) published in Paris in 1849. The illustration was created by Edouard Travies and engraved by Manceau. Brown bears, also known as grizzly bears in North America, are the largest land carnivores in the Northern Hemisphere. They are omnivores, feeding on a variety of foods including berries, roots, fish, and large animals such as elk and moose. The Brown Bear's coat is typically shaggy and brown, with a lighter muzzle and claws that are retractable but can be sharp and dangerous when extended. The Brown Bear is a powerful and agile animal, capable of running up to 30 miles per hour in short bursts. They are also excellent swimmers, able to cover long distances in water. Brown Bears are solitary animals, with females typically living in smaller home ranges than males. They are important keystone species in their ecosystems, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of their habitats. This beautiful handcolored engraving is a testament to the natural history artistry of the 19th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the Brown Bear to life, transporting us back in time to an era when the natural world was a source of endless fascination and wonder.
