EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the British Aerospace-Boeing Harrier T.12 ZH661 (msn TX009) of 20 (R) Squadron (formerly 233 Operational Conversion Unit), as it approaches the hover in the early 2000s. The Harrier, a ground-breaking short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft, was a joint venture between the British company British Aerospace and the American giant Boeing. The Harrier T.12 was a two-seat trainer version of the Harrier GR.9, which was the primary attack and ground-attack variant of the Harrier fleet. This specific aircraft, ZH661, was delivered to the Royal Air Force in 1994 and served with various squadrons throughout its career. The Harrier's ability to hover and take off and land vertically made it an invaluable asset for the military, particularly in the context of amphibious assault and close air support. In this photograph, we can see the Harrier's powerful engines working in unison to generate enough lift for the aircraft to hover, as it prepares to land on a short runway or a deck of a ship. The Harrier's sleek design and advanced capabilities made it a beloved and iconic aircraft within the aviation community. Its service with the Royal Air Force spanned over four decades, from the late 1960s to 2010, making it a significant part of British military aviation history. This photograph is a testament to the Harrier's remarkable engineering and the skill of the pilots who flew it. It is a reminder of the awe-inspiring capabilities of military aircraft and the important role they play in protecting and defending nations around the world.
