EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored steel engraving is an elegant representation of two vibrant South American tanagers: the Brazilian tanager (Ramphocelus bresilius) and the paradise tanager (Tangara chilensis). The Brazilian tanager, also known as the Brazilian silver-eye or Tatao, is native to the Atlantic Forests of Brazil. The male bird is depicted in all its resplendent glory, with its iridescent green and blue plumage, black mask, and distinctive red eyes. The female, on the other hand, is more subdued, with a brownish-olive back and a yellowish-green belly. The paradise tanager, also known as the Tangara or Tangara chilensis, is native to the forests of Central and South America. The male is depicted in the engraving with its brilliant red plumage, black mask, and yellow underparts. The female, as shown, is a more muted version of the male, with olive-green upperparts and a yellow belly. The engraving also includes a small plant in the foreground, identified as Tanacetum vulgare, commonly known as tansy. This plant is native to Europe and Asia and was likely included in the illustration to provide scale and add visual interest. This beautiful engraving is taken from Felix-Edouard Guerin-Méneville's Dictionnaire Pittoresque d'Histoire Naturelle (Picturesque Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris between 1834 and 1839. Guerin-Méneville was a French naturalist and artist who made significant contributions to the fields of ornithology and zoology. His work is renowned for its high-quality illustrations, which were produced using the latest techniques of the time, including steel engraving and hand-coloring. This engraving is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the skill of the artist and engraver who brought it to life. It is a valuable historical record of these stunning birds and a work of art in its own right.
