EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts five different species of ringlet butterflies from the Piedmont region of Europe: Blind Ringlet (Erebia pharte), Almond-eyed Ringlet (Erebia alberganus), Piedmont Ringlet (Erebia meolans), Sooty Ringlet (Erebia pluto), and the rarely seen Piedmont Almond-eyed Ringlet (Erebia pharte alberganus). The intricate details of their delicate wings and distinct markings are beautifully rendered in this engraving, created by the skilled Pauquet brothers and based on an illustration by Alexis Nicolas Noel for Hippolyte Lucas' Natural History of European Butterflies, published in 1864. The Blind Ringlet, also known as the Phartes Ringlet, is characterized by its lack of eyespots on the underside of its wings, while the Almond-eyed Ringlets display distinctive almond-shaped markings. The Piedmont Ringlet and Sooty Ringlet are easily distinguished by their dark, sooty wings, and the Piedmont Almond-eyed Ringlet is a rare subspecies of the Almond-eyed Ringlet, with both almond-shaped markings and a darker wing coloration. This stunning work of art not only showcases the natural beauty of these butterflies but also highlights the exceptional craftsmanship of the Pauquet brothers and the meticulous attention to detail in Hippolyte Lucas' Natural History of European Butterflies.
