EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed handcolored steel engraving depicts an adult male Berylline Hummingbird, Amazilia beryllina, also known as the Blue-bellied Hummingbird or Arsinoe's Hummingbird. The engraving is based on an illustration by Jean-Gabriel Pretre and was produced by Coutant for Rene Primevere's "Lessons Natural History of the Colibri Genus of Hummingbirds," published in Paris by Arthus Bertrand in 1830. The Berylline Hummingbird is a small, vibrant bird native to Central America. Males are easily identified by their iridescent blue belly, emerald green back, and brilliant orange throat. Females, on the other hand, have a duller appearance, with a green back, rufous belly, and white underparts. Hummingbirds are known for their unique abilities, including the capacity to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings up to 80 times per second. They are also the only group of birds that are able to fly backwards. The Berylline Hummingbird feeds primarily on nectar from flowers, using its long, curved beak to reach deep into the blooms. They also consume small insects and spiders for protein. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the stunning appearance of the Berylline Hummingbird, but also highlights the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration.
