EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the pivotal Battle of Sesimbra Bay, which took place on the shores of Portugal on the fateful day of June 3, 1602. At the time, Portugal was under Spanish rule, making this engagement part of the larger Anglo-Spanish War that spanned from 1585 to 1604. The conflict arose due to the Spanish Habsburg monarchy's attempts to extend its influence over Portugal, which was a significant source of global trade and maritime power. In this battle, the English Tudor navy, under the command of Sir John Norreys, attempted to disrupt the Spanish supply line by attacking a convoy of galleons laden with precious cargo. The English fleet, consisting of 13 ships, was vastly outnumbered by the Spanish forces, which included 24 galleons and numerous smaller vessels. Despite the odds, the English sailors fought valiantly, engaging the Spanish in a fierce naval battle that lasted for hours. The print captures the intensity of the engagement, with ships clashing in the foreground and smoke billowing from the gunpowder explosions in the background. The Spanish flag, emblazoned with the Habsburg eagle, can be seen on several ships, while the English flag, bearing the Tudor rose, flies proudly on Norreys' flagship. The Battle of Sesimbra Bay was a significant victory for the English, as they managed to destroy or capture several Spanish galleons, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. The engagement helped to disrupt Spanish supply lines and boosted English morale, ultimately contributing to the eventual outcome of the Anglo-Spanish War. This print is a testament to the bravery and determination of the sailors who fought in this pivotal engagement, as well as the strategic importance of naval warfare during the 17th century. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of war, adventure, and maritime power.
