EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the intricately patterned Banded Krait, Bungarus fasciatus, also known as the Fasciated Boa or the Fasciated Snake. The Banded Krait is a highly venomous elapid snake, native to South and Southeast Asia. Its body is adorned with striking, alternating black and white bands, providing excellent camouflage against the forest floor. The Banded Krait is a nocturnal and secretive species, spending most of its life hidden among the foliage. It is an ambush predator, using its unique coloration to blend in with its surroundings and surprise its prey. The snake's venom is potent and fast-acting, causing paralysis and death in its victims. This engraving is taken from John Mason Good's Pantologia, a New Encyclopedia, published in London by G. Kearsley in 1813. The detailed illustration highlights the meticulous craftsmanship of the time, offering a glimpse into the natural world of the past. The Banded Krait remains an important subject of herpetological study today, with ongoing research focusing on its venom composition, behavior, and conservation status.
